Three Step Sparring (Sambo Matsoki)
3 Step Sparring may vary slightly from club to club. The ten which we are required to learn are below. The first five are needed for Yellow Belt to Green Tag, and all ten are needed for Green Tag to Green Belt.
Attacker: Start in walking stance with left leg forward after executing an low section outer forearm block. Move forward three times in walking stance, executing a middle front punch.
Defender: Start off in parallel ready stance.
Number One
- Into walking stance, step back first with the right leg. Mid section inner forearm block three times.
- Counter after the third attack with middle section front punch.
Number Two
- Into L-stance, step back first with the left leg. Inner forearm middle block three times.
- Counter after the third attack by stepping forward with back leg then front leg so you are behind/to the side of the opponent, and knifehand to neck or floating ribs depending on height differential.
Number Three
- Into L-stance, step back first with the left leg. Outer forearm inward block three times.
- Counter after the third attack with a backfist to the nose.
Number Four
- Into L-stance, step back first with the left leg. Middle section outer forearm (outward) block three times.
- Counter after third attack by stepping forward left leg to a sitting stance while measuring to the ribs with your left hand. Double punch.
Number Five
- Into L-stance, step back first with the left leg. Palm inward block three times.
- Counter after third attack. Pivot on front foot placing other foot between attackers legs, making this leg the back leg of an L-stance. Execute a side elbow. (Only left elbow is meant to hit, right is reaction force).
Number Six
- Into L-stance, step back first with the right leg. Outer forearm middle block twice.
- On the third attack step to the side with the right leg executing a punch to the head simultaneously with the block.
Number Seven
- Into L-stance, step back first with the right leg. Knifehand middle block twice.
- On the third attack step to the side with the right leg executing an inward knifehand simultaneously with the block.
Number Eight
- Into L-stance, step back first with the right leg. Outer forearm middle block twice.
- On the third attack slide back into a forearm guarding block. On the slide give yourself enough room and counter with a front kick, double punch.
Number Nine
- Into L-stance, step back first with the right leg. Knifehand middle block twice.
- On the third attack slide back into a knifehand guarding block. On the slide give yourself enough room and counter with a side kick, backfist to nose.
Number Ten
- Into L-stance, step back first with the right leg. Palm inward block three times.
- Counter after third attack. Execute back leg turning kick placing the foot down behind the attacker after kicking. Then following with a knifehand.
