Inter-University Chess Tournament, Girton College, Cambridge University: (11/11/00)

The club sent a team of 6 to Girton College, Cambridge on Saturday 11th November to take part in the Inter-University Chess Tournament. The team didn't know what to expect, other than a strong Cambridge side, who unsurprisingly, went on to win comfortably (they had 200+ rated players on the top four boards!) However, we did not disgrace ourselves in the 7-round 10-minute blitz tournament, finishing with a grand total of 21 points out of 42, enough to secure 5th place out of 8, behind Cambridge 1, Oxford 1, Imperial and Cambridge 2 and ahead of Durham, Cambridge 3 and Oxford 2. It was very close for second place however, and with one round to go, we still had the possibility of finishing as runners-up. Special congratulations go to Richard Bates for gaining 5.5/7 and winning 2nd prize in the top board competition, whilst Oliver Gill also got an impressive 3.5 against strong opposition on board 3. The team who played, with their scores out of 7 in brackets, were:

Board 1: Richard Bates (5.5)
Board 2: Dave Buckley (4.5)
Board 3: Oliver Gill (3.5)
Board 4: Steven Turvey (1.5)
Board 5: Adam O'Reilly (3)
Board 6: Wern Kai Yap (3)

Hopefully, next year we can build upon this solid performance, as well as enter a second team, especially as we may get the opportunity to host the event!

Coventry And District Chess League Lightning Tournament 2000: (5/12/00)

The club sent 5 players to the annual league lightning tournament on Tuesday 5th November. Lightning chess means you get 10 seconds for each move, and is a great leveller (as anyone can blunder when you play that quickly!) Teams were of 6 players, so we gained a spare player from Meriden Knights to get our full quota. The tournament had a good atmosphere and wasn't too serious (due to the lack of prizes for winning it!) In the end though, we finished a credible 3rd out of the 7 teams who entered.

Final Team Scores (numbers of points in total scored against the other teams):

1st: Nuneaton 31.5/36
2nd: Whoberley A 26
3rd: WARWICK UNIVERSITY 24
4th: Coventry Transport 20

The University team, plus the number of points gained by each player, was:

Board 1: Dave Buckley 5/6
Board 2: Oliver Gill 4/6
Board 3: Adam O'Reilly 3/6
Board 4: Steven Turvey 5.5/6
Board 5: Leighton Powell 4.5/6
Board 6: Graham Winney (from Meriden Knights): 2/6

Well done to everyone who took part. It was good to see no University player getting less than half points, despite most of us not having played lightning chess for ages!

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament 2001: (4/12/01)

This time around the club managed to get a full team of six players out for this annual event, although exactly how this happened is still not entirely clear. The format was the same as last year's - 10 seconds per move, although it *seemed* like a lot more in the endgame and a lot less in the middle game. We got off to a good start with 11 points out of 12 against Meriden A and Whoberley B, but our hopes of doing better than last year were dashed in the next two rounds with losses to very strong Nuneaton A and Whoberley A sides. We won our last two matches against Nuneaton B and Meriden B convincingly though, securing third place and exactly the same score as last year(!). The team went home in high spirits, all six of us packing in to Ference's car for the ride back to Hearsall Common.

Final Team Scores (numbers of points in total scored against the other teams):

1st: Nuneaton A 31.5/36
2nd: Whoberley A 27.5
3rd: WARWICK UNIVERSITY 24
4th: Whoberley B 15
5th: Cov Transport 14.5
6th: Nuneaton B 12
7th: Meriden B 7.5
8th: Meriden A 6.5

The University team, plus the number of points gained by each player, was:

Board 1: Dave Buckley 4/6
Board 2: Richard Colfer 4.5/6
Board 3: Steven Turvey 3.5/6
Board 4: Adam O'Reilly 3.5/6
Board 5: Joey Stewart 4.5/6 (inc. a default win)
Board 6: Ference Brose 4/6 (inc. two default wins)

A good performance from everyone who turned up, with everyone scoring higher than 50%.

Inter-University Chess Tournament, Lib 1, Warwick University: (10/02/02)

Due to the success of last year's inter-university tournament, everyone agreed that another should be held this year. Our president (Dave Buckley) wasted no time in volunteering to host it here, at Warwick University. After months of e-mail conversations between the clubs to arrange the tournament, the day of the tournament finally arrived... along with nine teams from seven other universities and three from Warwick. Despite some organisational problems at the start of the day (not enough sets, boards or clocks...) the tournament finally got underway around 40 minutes after the scheduled start time. The format for the tournament was five rounds of twenty-five minutes each, with match points being used to decide the final places - game points as a tie-breaker. In the final round, Warwick I led the field by half a match point, and needed to beat Edinburgh to be certain of winning the tournament. In a hard-fought match on every board, Warwick came through to win and take first place. Thanks to all the universities who took part, everyone who loaned us equipment and especially to Dave Buckley and Steve Turvey for organising the tournament.

Coventry and District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament (03/12/2002)

This year, the University managed to enter two teams into the tournament, though the B team could only be completed by adopting two other players from other clubs. With only 6 teams participating, the tournament was conducted in the round-robin format. University A started horribly with a 5-1 defeat at eventual joint winners Nuneaton A. But comfortable wins over University B (5.5-0.5) and Nuneaton B (4.5-1.5), coupled with draws with Whoberley (the other joint winner) and Rugby, saw the University A team finish 3rd for the 3rd consecutive year. University B had a rough time of it though, but clearly out rated, they managed to pull off some impressive individual results to finish very closely with Nuneaton B.

Final Team Scores (numbers of points in total scored against the other teams):

1st: Nuneaton A - 23pts
1st: Whoberley - 23pts
3rd: University A - 17pts

C&D Individual Lightning Chess Tournament (25/02/2003)

A big round of applause to our very own Dave Buckley for winning the tournament with a 100% record, winning all 6 of his games. Other club participants didn't do too badly against a strong herd of competition: Adrian Fowkes got 4 out of 6; Alistair Fletcher and Divino Sabino got 3 out of 6; Joey Stewart got 2 out of 6 and Amit Sood came out with 1 out of 5 (plus one bye).

Inter-University Tournament (2003)Birmingham (08/02/2003)

The Inter University Tournament this year was slightly disappointing, not because we were knocked off our championship spot by a very strong Oxford team (too strong by my reckoning, I think someone should have blindfolded them before the matches in the interest of fairness) but because of Birmingham's organisational skills, which prevented more then one team per university from entering the tournament. This denied many Warwick players the chance to enter the tournament, and consequently, led to the withdrawal of two strong teams (Edinburgh and Cambridge), which weakened the overall field of players and allowed Oxford such an easy time. Ranting aside though, Warwick preformed admirably with a weaker team then last years winners and secured second place so as not to disgrace themselves. The tournament itself was a 25 min rapidplay event with 5 rounds.

Also our substitute, Nigel Chapman did very well in the Imperial team, getting 3/5 on board 2, makes you wonder why he was only a substitute....

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament 2003 (02/12/03)

Once again the university entered the league lightning and once again we came third! Hopes of bettering this notorious position were crushed in the first and second rounds where we were drawn against Whoberley and Nuneaton A consecutively, losing to both, 1-5 and 1.5-4.5. However, we wouldnt go down without a fight and won our next three games against Coventry Transport, Rugby and Nuneaton B (4.5-1.5, 3.5-2.5 and 5-1 respectively) allowing us to save face and come third again. The tournament itself was in the all play all format, with only six teams entering.

Final Team Scores (numbers of points in total scored against the other teams):

1st: Nuneaton A 23.5/30
2nd: Whoberley A 19.5/30
3rd: University 15.5/30

Board 4: Joey Stewart 3.5/5
Board 5: Andrew Inglis 0/5

A good performance (on the whole) by the team with hopes that one day we might break out of the cycle and get our hands on the second place.

Inter-University Tournament (2004)Warwick (07/02/2004)

Well, once again, Oxford I treated the other universities of England with a good thrashing (although not quite as convincingly as in previous years, some of their players even dropped full points!!) although hardly suprising as the average grade for their team was 180. After a bit of a ropey start with the rooms being locked only half an hour before the scheduled start time we were finally able to get set up and away. The tournament itself was a 25 min swiss over 5 rounds and ran very smoothly.

Coventry And District Chess League Individual Lightning Tournament 2004: (02/03/04)

Well it was certainly a change from last years tournament with no player distancing themselves until the very end, meaning that Alastair and I both went into the final round with a chance of winning the event. It is interesting to note that we were the only people to take any points off the winner - with both of us getting draws in good positions which could well have been won. Gui managed to beat Andy's 0/5 record in the team lightning by getting 0/6 but, to be fair to him, the average grade of player was about 135 so he was outgraded by at least 40 points in almost every game. The tournament itself was the usual 6 rounds with 10 seconds per move, with illegal moves resulting in the game being lost as many players found to their woe.

BCF 100 Years Celebration Match (Coventry): (21/04/04)

This was a match set up to celebrate 100 years of the BCFs existence, it was played between three local leagues, namely Birmingham, Coventry and Leamington. Each team had 20 players and the pairings were done in such a way to ensure a fair match for all the teams involved. Two university players took part and both won their games, which can be accessed by clicking on the links on their names. It was a close affair but in the end Coventry ended up joint first with Leamington on 11.5 each.

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament (30/11/04)

Unfortunately, the university was unable to turn out a team which was sufficient to handle the stronger forces of the league. With only 4 players for a 6 player tournament, we were only able to enter a team at all thinks to substitutes from Coventry but this was still not enough to prevent us from finishing very low. It was certainly an interesting year though, as Whoberley and Nuneaton were unable to prevent the forces of Coventry from taking the title for the first time in 11 years.

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament: (29/11/05)

After last year's unimpressive performance in the team lightning we had some pride to regain and, in this respect, we well and truly were given justice. A pretty strong squad of A and B team players was created to give us maximum winning chances and we set out, only to find the field to be a lot better then anticipated.

A nice convincing 5-1 win vs last year's champions, Coventry, gave us high hopes for the tournament but the second round we drew our greatest nemesis - Whoberley A. The games in this match were all of a good standard and, at 3 - 2 up, it came down to the result of the third board to decide whether we finally got a win against this dangerous side or just held them to a draw. The game itself was most intersting, involving the rare position of a queen vs three minor pieces and it looked as if the small army of lesser pieces were getting the better of the powerful queen until "luck" conspired against Whoberley and a series of blunders allowed most of the pieces to be lost, ending in a win for us 4 - 2. Having now overcome Whoberley A it was up to their B team to extract revenge upon us, but their forces were dashed upon the rocks and dispersed in a 4.5 - 1.5 win for us. Next up was another big shot team, Nuneaton, who had also laid claim to the title in previous years. Their formidable force was just not enough to overcome the rampaging university team, and they were blasted off the boards in a 5 - 1 victory. With this win it was looking certain for us to take the championship for the first time in university history; all we had to do was overcome Rugby in the final round. With a 1 point advantage from the start, due to a default on board 6, it was going to be a massive effort for them. They fought bravely but were also snuffed out in our final 4.5 - 1.5 victory.

In the meantime, however, Whoberley A had been annhialating the other teams and had come within spitting distance of catching us in the final round. Fortunately they were a mere half point short in the end (and in fact even with that extra half they would have still lost as it would have been decided by the result between our two teams) and the university made chess history by winning the team lightning for the first time!

Coventry And District Chess Individual Lightning Tournament: (07/03/06)

With university players making up half the field for this event, it was a better turnout then ever before. Some very interesting games went on, and club vice president Joey Stewart came close to getting something out of it all but failed to beat the eventual winner Colin Green from a good position and then lost the final round game to the lowest rated (but, by no means the weakest) player in the tournament. In the end it was Ian Gallagher, a recent recruit of the university society, who came out with the best socres amongst university entrants. The final player scores are as follows:

A good turnout by the reliable players of the A team meant that we even had enough leftover players to make a B team (our first B team in this tournament for four years) albeit, missing a player thanks to some last minute dropouts.
A slight problem was encountered upon arrival as Meriden had unexpectedly entered a side in the competition, making a total of seven teams. There were two potential solutions to this problem - either have an all play all which would last seven rounds (as it would be structured as an 8 player tournament but have one side sit out each round) or, for the sake of an earlier finish, adding a Meriden player to each team to increase the squads to 7 men. In the end, the latter of these solutions was chosen and the University adopted two new 'students'- Robert Glinton played in the A team and William Davis played in the B.
A good solid win in round one (6-1) against University B put us in good stead for the upcoming battles against the tougher teams. Round 2 saw us facing a weakened (but still dangerous) Nuneaton side but we gave no ground easily and comfortably won the match 5.5-1.5.
Next round was, effectively, the deciding match of the tournament against Whoberley A. The top 3 boards were first to finish, bringing the University a 2-1 lead. Whoberley then struck back, with wins on board 6 and 7. A win on board 5 meant that the result of the match was to be decided board four. Fortunately our board 4 is a three time team lightning champion and overcame his opponant to win us this crucial match 4-3.
Next match against Rugby was another solid win (5-2) although not without some underhanded tactics being used by both sides, two matches being decided by illegal moves (a valid rule in lighting chess is that an illegal move results in a lost game).
This left us with a 3 point lead on closest rivals Whoberley A and, worse still, we were facing their B team who were prepared to put up the fight of their lives to help their A team over the victory line. Whoberley A duely achieved a 7-0 whitewash of University B, putting the pressure on the A team to produce a good win in order to secure the tournament. The Whoberley B players fought admirably but were finally overcome in a 5.5-1.5 win for the University.

As I dont know the individual details of the B team I will just put the main highlights of each match.
Round 1 was a 1-6 loss to University A with the win coming from Michael Jones against Stephen Clark.
Round 2 saw the B team taste victory, beating Whoberley B 4-3 even with a default.
Round 3 the B team were again successful, winning against Rugby, the best individual result was Michael Harris beating Bob Wildig on board one,4-2 was the final score.
Round 4, the team again only just lost out to Nuneaton in a 3-3 draw which could have been another win were it not for an illegal move.
Round 5 is one the B team would probably rather never think about again as they were on the receiving end of a 7-0 whitewash by Whoberley A.
It must be said, that with a full side, the B team would have likely finished at least two points higher as two other sides only had 5 players but even though they finished last they were by no means the worst side.

Inter-University Chess Tournament, Lib 1, Warwick University (17/2/2007)

This year twelve teams from six universities turned out for a six round Swiss rapidplay tournament, and after the previous few had been dominated by one team it was nice to see a close finish for once: Warwick I, Sheffield I and Nottingham tied for first place (Sheffield winning the title on tiebreak), with Imperial I just half a point behind. Our other three teams, while not threatening to upset those which outgraded them by 50+ on every board, performed creditably, finishing 7th, 9th and 11th respectively. Congratulations to Reading, who managed to put out a team despite only setting up their club this year, while several long-established clubs failed to enter teams - although they came last they showed signs of promise, and we wish them all the best for the future development of their club. We would like to thank the Warwick Graduates Association and Chess & Bridge Ltd. for sponsoring the tournament.

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament 2008 (02/12/08)

Attendance at this year's tournament was poor, with only four teams participating, but this should not detract from another fine performance by the university team in winning the event yet again. We dominated throughout and, 3-0 up against Rugby in the fifth round, needed only one point from the last three games to have the trophy in the bag with a round to spare. Unfortunately we didn't get it, but we still led by 5.5 points going in to the last round and a quick win on board 5 was sufficient to seal the title. I think my first game against Nalin Kadodwala deserves a mention: he dropped a rook on move 6 and was getting comprehensively thrashed when he managed to come up with the threat of a perpetual, compelling me to finish the game entirely with checks - which I duly did, dragging his king all the way up the board to mate it on h8 after sacrificing my king's rook before it had moved.

Coventry And District Chess League Individual Lightning Tournament 2009 (10/03/09)

This year's individual lightning was more open than most, with a strong turnout to challenge Colin Green's usual monopoly of the tournament, and the first sign that we might get a different winner came when Colin lost to Dave Ireland in the first round. After beating Tim and Alex in the first two rounds I did my best to mess up a won position against Bob Wildig in the third, handing back the exchange I'd won earlier before eventually managing to convert an endgame with knight and four pawns against bishop and two into the full point. My reward for being on 3/3 was being drawn against Dave, the only other player on the same score after beating Mark Page in the third round. Dave won a pawn early on but erred in attempting to hold onto it at all costs, underestimated my attack and got mated. That put me in the sole lead, which was never likely to last very long when I had to play John Naylor next (on 3.5/4 after drawing with Carl Pickering); despite overlooking the fact that I'd left a piece en prise he still beat me comfortably. Before the last round John had the sole lead, with Colin, Dave and me all half a point behind; John made sure of overall victory by beating Dave quickly, while Colin made heavy work of a won endgame to give me good drawing chances, which I then proceeded to spoil by blundering away my last pawn to give him the game on a plate. Alex and JP both recovered from poor starts to finish in the middle of the table, while Tim managed a creditable performance against stronger opposition to finish with 2 points.

Coventry And District Chess League Team Lightning Tournament 2009 (01/12/09)

This year's team lightning stuck with the format of a four team double round robin, with seven players to a team - since neither we nor Rugby had that many, we borrowed some of Coventry's reserves (indicated by an asterisk in the results) and adopted some weird system of half point defaults unfathomable to anyone except (and probably including) Dave and Steve. With a team significantly below full strength, our chances of retaining the trophy were fairly remote to start off with, and any chances we might have had disappeared fairly rapidly when we were comprehensively thrashed by Rugby in the first round. In the end Rugby ran out comfortable winners, while we managed to finish 3 ahead of Coventry A on match points (primarily thanks to beating them 4-3 twice) but 3.5 behind them on board points, after having eagerly agreed beforehand that board points should be used to determine the standings; Coventry B put in a surprisingly poor performance for a team on paper not significantly weaker than the opposition, being on the receiving end of two 7-0 whitewashes and managing just a single match point (against us). Chris put in a respectable performance given the standard of the opposition on board 1, and was unlucky to forfeit one game for not moving on the buzzer; Steve, Alex and I all scored well on the middle boards; Arvind did his best but ended up breaking the long-standing record for the worst score by a university player in the competition (Andy Inglis, 0/5 in 2003 - see above). Kumaravel, our Coventry ringer, made a more than useful contribution on board 6.

Christmas Blitz (10/12/09)

For the last club night of term we held a blitz pairs tournament (ten minutes per side, the players in a pair make alternate moves and are not allowed to consult during the game); this had to be abandoned after three of the intended six rounds when half the players involved left, so we had a normal blitz tournament with whoever was left. Ankush and Alex C won the pairs, Chris the 'singles'. Highlights included the manic time scramble between me and Ben and Nick and David which ended in them winning by one second; Ben's unsound but spectacularly effective rook sacrifice that transformed a seemingly lost position against Alex; and David losing on time in a totally won position against Chris.

BUCA Championship, Barcelo Hotel, Oxford (27-28/02/10)

Congratulations to Bath, who won this year's BUCA tournament on tiebreak from Edinburgh, after they drew with each other and both won all their other games. Warwick's team of Chris Russell, Chris Wilke, Victor Vas, Ben Simpson and John-Paul Taylor won two matches and lost three to finish ninth overall. Thanks to Alex Holowczak for organising the tournament.

Coventry And District Chess League Individual Lightning Tournament 2010 (09/03/10)

The field for this year's individual lightning tournament was somewhat weaker than previous years, with reigning champion John Naylor declining to defend his title and several other strong players also absent; both the University and Coventry contingents were further depleted by the decision to reschedule two postponed Divisional Cup matches for the same evening. There was still plenty of competition for the title, though; Carl Pickering, graded 162, was the favourite on paper, followed by Bob Holmes, Jonathan Cox, Nalin, Steve and me all around the 150 mark, with David completing the university's representation.

The first round, with each player in the top half of the seedings playing one from the bottom half as is the norm for a Swiss tournament, brought few surprises; all three university players won against division 3 opposition, and the only player to defy the difference in grades was bottom seed James Mendes, who beat Trevor Rist.

Round 2 saw contrasting fortunes for us: David scored an excellent win against Nalin while Steve lost to Jon Cox and I was forced to scrounge for a draw a pawn down in the endgame against Trevor. James Mendes caused an even bigger upset in beating Carl Pickering, leaving him, David, Jon and Bob Holmes as the only players on 2/2, followed by me on 1.5.

David continued his excellent run in round 3 with a win against Bob, while James belied his grade for the third time in succession to beat Jon and take the joint lead. Steve and I both also won to stay within reach of the top - me on 2.5/3 with Bob, Jon, Carl, Nalin and Steve all on 2.

The two leaders faced off in the fourth round, with David the one to maintain his 100% record and take the sole lead; I stayed half a point behind with a win against Bob, Jon won a grudge match against Nalin and Steve ground down Carl in the longest game of the round, both of them joining James in joint third position with 3/4.

The penultimate round inevitably saw David and me paired against each other - a game which looked to be going very much in his favour after I hung a piece. As I've done with alarming regularity in league matches, having managed to obtain what should in theory have been a completely lost position I set out to endeavour to swindle something out of it, and as has often been the case in league matches I succeeded, although in this instance a large proportion of the credit should go to David for an inexplicably generous draw offer when he was still a piece up, declining the chance to put one hand on the trophy by taking a full point lead with a round remaining. With 4.5/5 he still retained the lead, but only half a point clear of me and Jon - who beat Trevor - with Steve and James another half point behind after drawing with each other.

Steve, who along with Dave Filer was conducting the draw for each round, did his best to limit my chances of winning by handing me black against Carl for the final round, but after dropping a pawn in the middlegame I found an exchange sacrifice which forced a pawn through to promotion and brought his resignation a few moves later, giving me a final score of 5 and guaranteeing at least clear second place. The fate of the trophy hinged on the top board game between Jon and David; a win for David would leave him in clear first, any other outcome would give a tie at the top. Jon's eventual win was enough for him to join me on 5/6; after some discussion as to whether we ought to let the result stand as a joint win, choose a tiebreak method or stage a playoff, the latter was chosen, and as Steve had won his last round game to finish as the only other player on 4.5, Dave decided we might as well have another playoff for third and fourth places. I managed to win a pawn against Jon, but in an endgame with opposite coloured bishops it didn't look like being enough to win; since we were supposed to be getting a result out of the game I felt compelled to play on when otherwise I'd have offered a draw immediately, but after a few more moves it was clear that Jon would have no problems holding the draw, and we agreed to share the trophy rather than keep playing tiebreak games until one of us won one. David beat Steve to take third place, while Wesley Beeston beat Nalin and James in the last two rounds to finish with 4/6 and fifth place, James with 3.5 and sixth.

Circular Chess World Championship 2010 (09/03/10)

The change in date for this year's World Championship left several university players unable to attend, including reigning world champion Chris Russell; Steve Turvey was our only representative at the tournament and put in a strong showing, with wins over six-time champion Francis Bowers and double winner Herman Kok; unfortunately Francis won every other game to take the title yet again (but for the first time since 2004) with 10/11 points, while Steve conceded two draws and a loss (to Rob Stevens, the first world champion) to finish joint second with 9.
